TJ Tate, the sustainability director for Gulf Wild, was presented with the Seafood Champion Award for Vision. She was recognized for her pioneering work that included video monitoring on commercial fishing boats, creating collaboration between scientists and fishermen, and marketing of bycatch to avoid waste.
Gulf Wild, an organization known for branding fishery conservation in the Gulf of Mexico by inspiring positive change from the fishermen to the end-consumer, has reformed as a not-for-profit and hired a full-time staff.
The red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico has gotten a little less “red”. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program has removed the Gulf of Mexico red snapper commercial fishery from their ‘Avoid’ or “Red” list.
