Fishermen, processors, distributors, economic developers, and public officials are being invited to Baton Rouge to discuss findings from more than three years of research done in Louisiana’s coastal and inland fisheries at the launch of the Louisiana’s Freshwater Seafood Economic Development Report. The original study, Community Economic Development in Rural Coastal Acadiana Parishes, was conducted in 2018-19, prior to the four hurricanes devastating the state’s seafood industry.
A new study by the University of Louisiana Lafayette examining the people and industries on the frontlines of Gulf seafood and detailing how the industry has weathered challenges while capitalizing on opportunities for growth will be expanded to include all Louisiana parishes bordering the Gulf. A $250,000 grant by the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board will dovetail with an initial grant by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the same amount expanding the initial study.
A grant entitled Community Economic Development in Rural Coastal Acadiana Parishes is a collaborative effort between the University of Louisiana Lafayette and Meridian Institute. The focus is on seafood in coastal Acadiana, a very rural region of the state.
The Joint Ocean Commission Initiative Leadership Council is holding roundtable discussions focused on the Arctic, East, West, and Gulf Coasts, and has invited two Gulf Seafood Institute members to have a seat at its Gulf roundtable being held in New Orleans.
