A strong voice for the Gulf seafood communities in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida has presented written testimony to the Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard on the topic of third-party sustainability certification of U.S. seafood, as well as its impact on the seafood community, consumers and the marketplace.
As the government shutdown continues, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspectors responsible for the safety of the consumer’s food, including seafood, have been furloughed. According to Harlon Pearce of the Gulf Seafood Institute, Baur should not worry about the safety of seafood coming from Gulf of Mexico during the shutdown.
A new Fishery Improvement Partnership Fund that will help address overfishing and advance Fishery Improvement Projects worldwide. The Walton Family Foundation, in collaboration with Darden Restaurants, plans to create the new fund as an investment model. The fund, announced at the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting is being developed as an official Commitment to Action.
