Florida Maritime Museum Shares Gulf and Atlantic Fishing and Maritime Heritage

Founded by settlers from North Carolina in the 1880’s, Cortez is one of the last historic Gulf waterfronts with a working commercial fishing village. A short walk from the Florida fishing fleet waiting to unload Gulf seafood is the Florida Maritime Museum, home to interpretive exhibits as well as an educational program studying the Florida waters.

An ambitious project to build a sustainable seafood industry with international distribution in the Sarasota-Manatee region while reviving a heritage fishing community and adding new jobs through a value-added processing plant has landed the top award in the first Gulf Coast Innovation Challenge.

The Gulf Seafood Foundation, the “Voice of the Gulf”, is a 501(C)(3) Gulf-wide non-profit with that emphasizes the importance of science and education for continued sustainable fisheries for future generations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Comprised of a diverse membership, the Gulf Seafood Foundation is a unified, proactive and positive voice promoting interests vital to the economy of the Gulf, as well addressing environmental issues and actions that affect the region. Its mission is a voice of reason finding solutions to a wide variety of important issues the area faces.
