Mobile’s Senior Bowl showcases some of the best players in college football’s senior class. This year the annual event has become a little fishy. Alabama Gulf Seafood has become an official sponsor of the 2014 college football game held along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.

Along the Texas to Florida Gulf shore, football and seafood have become a game day tradition, and Alabama is no exception. Whether tailgating at the game or firing up the backyard grill, Gulf seafood goes great with college football.

Alabama Gulf Seafood will join title sponsor Reese’s, maker of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, in the annual event.  Other event sponsors include Wells Fargo, Academy Sports and Outdoors, Under AmourCoca-Cola,  Iberia Bank and AT&T.

The NFL has selected coaching staffs from the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars as coaches for the game, which features players from BCS National Champion Florida State, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Notre Dame, Michigan, Wisconsin, Stanford and Ohio State.

“I am so happy to be involved with the Senior Bowl events because we get to share our great seafood with players, coaches, scouts and media from all over the country,” said Chris Blankenship, director of Alabama Marine Resources and program administrator for the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission. “I hope to create several ‘seafood ambassadors’ that will go back to their respective cities and rave about the seafood and hospitality they enjoyed in Alabama.”

Alabama Gulf Seafood Player/Media Night will follow the first South Team practice kicking off a series of weeklong events.

According to Blackenship, “We’ll have Alabama Gulf Seafood banners on display to proudly represent our industry to media members from across the country. Also on Tuesday the AT&T Seafood Jubilee will host Senior Bowl VIPs.”

The Alabama seafood organization will also staff a booth at the AL.com–Press-Register Senior Bowl Experience held at the Mobile Convention Center on Friday of game week.

On game day, January 25th, Alabama Gulf Seafood will host the Baumhower Tailgate Challenge in the stadium parking lot. With the help of  Mobile’s Baumhower’s Restaurant, the competition was created in 2004 to determine the best tailgater at the Senior Bowl each year.  The competition includes best “Best Alabama Seafood Gumbo” and “Best Alabama Seafood Entree”.

During the game the Alabama Gulf Seafood slogan: “Caught with honor, served with pride” will be announced.

“I’m proud to be affiliated with a great organization like the Senior Bowl,” Blankenship said. “The sports world will be focused on Coastal Alabama for an entire week. The exposure is great for our area and for the seafood industry.”
