‘Complacency’ in Shrimp Aquaculture Caused EMS Spread
Complacency in shrimp aquaculture during a period of relatively trouble-free shrimp production resulted in laxity of farming practices, leaving the sector vulnerable to disease.
A United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the ministry of agriculture and rural development (MARD) of Vietnam, the conclusion was published in a recently released report from a workshop held in Vietnam on the early mortality syndrome (EMS) crisis in the sector.
The report stated it is “now clear that shrimp aquaculture needs to improve and continue to develop into a sector that implements responsible and science-based farming practices”.
Because of the “current understanding that EMS has a bacterial aetiology, a strain of vibrio parahaemolyticus, the workshop recommended that a proper name be now given to EMS, i.e. acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND)”

Ecuador Shrimp Prices Up Over 70% Y_O_Y as World’s Buyers Scramble for Supply
Shrimp prices from Ecuador are up over 70% year-on-year, with prices for headless product for the US and head-on for Europe rocketing.

Thai Shrimp Packers ‘Ride the Storm’ of Record Prices, Brace for Further Increases
Prices for shrimp raw material in Thailand are up again, with processors predicting a rising market until mid-way through next year.
Strong demand from Thailand’s processors to fill orders combined with the devastating impact of early mortality syndrome (EMS) on production is causing new record prices every week, sources told Undercurrent News.
“I don’t see any relief before July next year. We just have to ride the storm,” said the managing director of one Thai processor, wishing to be quoted unnamed.
